When we talk about the "Westside" of Portland, we are referring to the area West of the Willamette River. (Downtown Portland, is on the Westside of the river). The areas closest to the City are NW Portland which includes the area North of Highway 26, and the area just South of the City known as SW Portland.
While that is the formal definition of Westside, the Westside more accurately describes the suburbs or surrounding Cities that are to the west of downtown Portland. Within a 15 mile radius of downtown you will find the Cities of Beaverton, Hillsboro, Lake Oswego, Sherwood, Tigard, Tualatin, West Linn and Wilsonville. All of these Cities make up the Portland "Westside" communities.
The suburbs began in the early 70's so the communities are fairly new and designed with modern techniques. Sherwood, West Linn and Wilsonville didn't come into their own until the 1990s. The schools on the Westside have generally out performed those in the City of Portland, making this the first choice for many families. Taxes are lower because these areas do not have to pay any Portland City taxes, and are not in Multnomah County. Beaverton, Hillsboro, Tigard, Tualatin, and Sherwood are part of Washington County. Lake Oswego, West Linn, and Wilsonville are in Clackamas County. Generally Washington and Clackamas counties are a good selling point for resale.
