The State of Oregon went through a major reform in the 1990's to better prepare our children for the 21st century. The result was the Oregon Educational Act for the 21st Century, a series of educational standards which will prepare our children for life in the 21st century. Students will be given classroom work every year and take state tests in grades 3, 5, 8 and 10. This progressive process is fully explained at the Oregon Public Education Network

Oregon suffered from some pretty serious budget shortfalls during the recession beginning in 2001. Since public schools are funded by the State General Fund and the majority of that revenue comes from corporate and personal income taxes, a recession results in a significant fluctuation in school funding revenue. Since schools make up over 45% of the total General Fund budget, things were a bit rough for a few years. The recession is over and revenue is on the up-swing, increasing budgets for our schools. The Governor has identified school funding as a top priority for his second term. So on that note, you can find more information by reading articles printed in The Oregonian Newspaper (Portland), and the Statesman Journal (Salem, the Capital City).
